Cupping Therapy

Cupping Therapy

Ancient Healing Through Negative Pressure

Cupping Therapy is one of the oldest and most effective methods in Traditional Chinese Medicine, dating back over 3,000 years. This distinctive technique creates suction on the skin using special cups—traditionally made of glass, bamboo, or ceramic, though modern versions also include silicone.

Unlike massage that applies pressure downward into the tissues, cupping uses negative pressure to lift skin, superficial fascia, and muscles upward into the cup. This reverse pressure helps separate tissues that may be adhered together, increases blood circulation to areas that may be stagnant, and draws toxins toward the surface for easier elimination.

At Seattle Chinatown Massage, our practitioners are extensively trained in both traditional and modern cupping techniques. We offer this powerful therapy as both a standalone treatment and as an integrated component of our massage sessions for those seeking deeper therapeutic results.

The Treatment Experience

Your Cupping Therapy session combines several therapeutic elements:

  • Consultation: Your practitioner discusses your health concerns and evaluates appropriate treatment areas
  • Preparation: The skin is prepared with massage oil to create an effective seal
  • Cup Application: Cups are applied using either:
    • Fire Cupping: A traditional method where heat creates vacuum suction
    • Vacuum Cupping: Modern cups with pumps that create controlled suction
  • Static Cupping: Cups remain in place for 5-15 minutes, creating circular marks as stagnant blood is drawn to the surface
  • Sliding Cupping: Cups are moved across oiled skin, providing a deep tissue massage effect
  • Flash Cupping: Quick application and removal of cups for stimulation without leaving marks
  • Integration: The session concludes with gentle massage to integrate the effects

During treatment, you'll feel a tight sensation under the cups as your skin and superficial muscle layer are drawn upward. This sensation is typically described as strange but not painful, and many clients find it oddly satisfying as tight tissues release.
